The Beautiful, Brutal Bartang

Della •

We have been on the road with our bikes for just over two weeks. We have been riding the road on our bikes for about 8 of those 17 days (the other 9 spent getting here from southern China via train, bus, and van), the most recent 8 consecutive days (or 6, if you don’t count rest days). It is July 5th, we are in the town of Karakol, a high elevation winter settlement sitting snug as a tick next to the giant Lake Karakul of Tajikistan’s Pamir Mountains. It is currently near-deserted as most of its inhabitants have taken their herds (mostly yak and goat) to the nearby Bartang Valley for summer grazing.

A Volcano Erupts

It felt like a particularly early 7am at the Bali airport, and we were listlessly shouldering our big bags after unloading them from the trunk of our taxi. A hopeful Indonesian man walked up to us and asked, “Taxi?” …really? We had just arrived at the airport. Did he want to drive us all the way to Bangkok? Picking up the rest of our bags, we barely looked at the guy, “We just got here, no we don’t need a taxi.” “Yes, but the airport is closed, and, yes,” nodding at our ridiculous load of baggage, “ you do need a taxi.” [Read more…]

Indonesian Volcanos: Mount Rinjani Summit in a Day, Without a Guide.

Tucker •

Mt Rinjani in a day: 2600m altitude gain, 34km round trip, 16hr hike.

We left the homestay at midnight without a moon to help us. We were at the rim camp by 4am and could see the long chain of headlamps ascending the ridge as tired campers were trying to get to the summit before sunrise. By 9am we were standing on the summit.  Most of the 2 day climbers having already descended, we had the top (mostly) to ourselves. The sky was stark blue and the wind began to abate and loose its chill as the sun climbed into the day. We rested, spun a few pirouettes on the pinnacle and made a rapid decent. Beers were cracked and guzzled back on the front porch of our homestay by 4pm. It’s a long day, and only for the confidant and competent. It might be illegal, it might blow out your knees, but if you are looking for information on how to do it, read on.

This Adventure

Della •

The following is not really an introduction. It is, rather, a history of sorts, a retrospective. Because it seems to me that our website could use a simple explanation of how we got here. So I’m just going to briefly lay out what we are doing and have been doing on this trip. I guess it is an introduction of sorts: a hand shake with the birth of the adventure and its enactment up to date.

About Us

We are two regular superheroes: tight spandex, obvious muscles, 'special' abilities. We like holding our breath, eating the delicious food, up hill walking, touching rock, beer-coffee-spinach smoothies, and words. Together we are dellandtucker, apart we are just lonely.
